QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. Why do I need protein?

Protein, and only protein, provides your body with the amino acids it needs to repair and rebuild muscles. Protein also provides the necessary components to keep your immune system healthy, make hormones, enzymes, skin, hair, nails, organs and blood. The body can make carbohydrates from protein, but it cannot make protein from carbohydrates.
(Note the word protein comes from the Greek word "proteios" meaning of prime or of first importance.)

Q. What are APTTM - Full Spectrum Whey Peptides?

A complete spectrum of very low, low, medium and high molecular weight whey peptides. These peptides make up the major and minor fractions of specially prepared whey protein.

  1. Beta-Lactoglobulin (~53%) is the largest protein fraction of whey and rich in branched chain amino acids, necessary to fuel muscle growth.
  2. Alpha-Lactalbumin (~16%) is a low molecular weight peptide that is easily digested allowing faster absorption and uptake into muscles.
  3. Glycomacropeptides (~14%) stimulate the release of CCK, a hormone that signals the brain "you're full"; possibly helping to reduce your appetite.
  4. Immunoglobulins (~5%), as the name implies, may help to bolster the immune system.
  5. Bovine Serum Albumin peptides (~3.5%) are rich in the precursors necessary for the production of glutathione - the body's most important antioxidant. Research has shown whey protein increases glutathione levels in the body.
  6. Lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase and lysozyme (~3.5%) have antimicrobial properties.

Q. What is Active Peptide TransportTM?

Active Peptide Transport
TM--Designer Whey's new patent pending formula is a breakthrough in whey protein-peptide delivery. Active Peptide Transport describes a new formulation that results in absorption of whey peptides in a faster, more efficient manner.

Fast protein absorption is important if you want to maximize your anabolic potential since significant scientific research has demonstrated that the faster a protein source is absorbed, the more protein synthesis is stimulated. (Resulting in faster muscle growth!)

Active Peptide Transport was designed to do just this: provide faster and better protein-peptide absorption to stimulate protein synthesis and muscle growth.

Q. Does Designer WheyTM contain aspartame?

No, as of 3/1/99 no flavors contain aspartame.

Q. What are the sweeteners used?

Acesulfame K, a non-nutritive sweetener, is used in Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla Praline. Acesulfame K passes through the body without being broken down. That is, it is not metabolized by the body, which means that acesulfame K is nutritionally inert. Acesulfame K is the most widely approved and used sweetener in the world.

Q. What are glycomacropeptides?

Glycomacropeptides are low molecular weight peptides found in specially processed whey proteins. These peptides have been shown in research to exert numerous health benefits, including appetite suppression. Research shows that glycomacropeptides stimulate the release of CCK (cholecystokinin), a hormone that signals the brain "you're full".

Q. Why should I mix protein into a drink and consume it immediately?

Immediately does not mean instantly. However, drinking within 30 minutes of mixing is smart as pure protein in the liquid form is an extremely fertile environment for airborne bacteria growth. Leaving a protein drink (reconstituted from powder) in a refrigerator for two hours is probably okay, but not overnight.

Q. What happens to the protein if I bake it? Freeze it? Blend it?

Any extreme temperatures, freezing or high heat (above ~140ºF), can denature protein (produce cross-linking) and reduce its solubility, digestibility and bioavailability.

Blending a protein solution (heat and foaming) can result in the denaturation of proteins, leading to a loss of solubility and biological functionality. However, the small amount of heat or foaming produced during preparation of a shake from a powder by blending in a household blender will not cause any damage to the proteins.

Q. What is whey?

Whey is a by-product of the cheese making process. It is the soluble protein fraction after the precipitation of the insoluble protein (casein) fraction.

Q. Is milk the same as whey?

No, milk contains 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein.

Q. Is Designer WheyTM lactose free?

Designer Whey
TM is 98% lactose free and, at recommended levels, suitable for most anyone with lactose intolerances.

Q. Can diabetics use Designer WheyTM?

Yes, but please see a physician first. Ask the doctor to review the ingredients and the supplement facts on the Designer Whey label.

Q. What if I am pregnant?

Yes. The above warning applies.

Q. Will a protein powder give me big muscles?

In order to achieve muscle growth while using protein powders you must "weight train" on a regular basis. A recommended workout for obtaining greater muscle definition is to exersise or train 3-4 days a week, rest prudently, avoid overtraining, and eat right. If you stick to this program, you may see results in as short a period of time as six weeks. Continuing this regimine for 48 weeks a year, for at least 3 or 4 years, will provide you the opportunity to attain the "big muscles" or improved muscular definition you are looking for.

Q. If I consume Designer Whey every day, how soon can I expect to see results?

This will depend upon genetics, technique and your level of motivation and dedication. In addition to providing your body with high-quality protein like Designer Whey, you must participate in a systematic weight-training program on a regular basis. This is not to say you must work out if you use Designer Whey. Designer Whey is still a tasty and convenient protein supplement to add to your healthy diet, whether or not you exercise.

Q. Won't protein give me energy and keep me up all night?

Protein provides calories (4 cals/gram). Calories are energy. So the simple answer is YES, protein gives you energy. But the "energy" boost should not be confused with the mental-alertness type of effect obtained with caffeine found in cola, coffee, tea, etc.

However, research has demonstrated that protein may enhance cognitive function and concentration in mental type tasks ;better than carbohydrates which actually make you sleepy. So if you have the afternoon "blahs", need to work or study late at night, or feel slightly fatigued mentally or physically, enjoy a pure protein shake with minimal carbohydrates.

Q. How much protein do I need on a daily basis?

Several factors play critical roles in how much protein your body needs. Age, metabolic rate, exercise level, stress factors (work, health status, viral or bacterial infection), your amount of sleep, and the quality and quantity of foods you eat, all play a role in determining your protein requirements. Extensive research into human metabolic rates and how they are affected by age, activity and stress have been prepared over the last decade by leading physicians in hospital settings. See the table below for estimates of your protein requirements based on your personal lifestyle/training goals.

Lifestyle/Training Goal Daily Protein Needs   Lifestyle/Training Goal Daily Protein Needs
Stressed 0.45 - 0.7g/lb bodyweight   Endurance 0.7 - 0.9g/lb bodyweight
Trauma Recovery 0.9 - 1.4g/lb bodyweight   Power & Speed 0.9 - 1.1g/lb bodyweight
Dieting 0.35 - 1.0g/lb bodyweight   Strength & Bodybuilding 1.0 - 1.6g/lb bodyweight

Q. When's the best time to take protein?

There is no set time; first thing in the morning and last thing at night are both good times. However, the most important time is right after you workout, when muscles are in an anabolic state (15 to 30 minutes after exercise finishes). Protein consumption at this time allows nutrients to be shunted preferentially into protein synthesis rather than energy production or conversion to fat.

Mixing protein with 8 ounces of fruit juice (grape, orange or apple) has been shown to help speed protein delivery to muscles after workouts. The high glycemic carbs from the juice create a release of insulin which acts synergistically with the enzyme glycogen synthetase, speeding protein/peptides and amino acid nitrogen into muscle cells and away from fat cells.

Q. Why should I take Designer WheyTM with grape juice immediately after a workout? Can I take it at other times?

It is important to consume Designer Whey with grape juice [or any high glycemic (sweet) carbohydrate] immediately (15 - 30 mins) after your workout. This is based on scientific research that demonstrates that consuming high glycemic carbohydrates and protein, in combination, increases the rate of muscle glycogen (carbohydrate) synthesis and protein storage after exercise. In other words, the post-workout carbohydrate/protein meal enhances glycogen re-synthesis and protein synthesis. During exercise, your muscle glycogen and amino acid stores become depleted. After exercise, as a result of heightened insulin sensitivity and muscle cell receptor site stimulation, your muscles are primed to receive protein and carbohydrates.

Q. Can too much protein hurt my kidneys?

This hasn't been demonstrated for the healthy individual. Bodybuilders frequently consume 300-500g of protein per day for months - even years, yet there is no scientific evidence that this high protein intake causes kidney problems. Rather, animals with high protein intakes for more than half their lifetime showed no kidney damage. High protein intake may be hazardous for anyone with abnormal kidney function or kidney disease. For the disease-free individual, the most serious concern with high protein intake is dehydration because it takes a lot of water to metabolize protein. This is avoided by drinking 8 or more 8 oz. glasses of water a day.

As a side note, interestingly enough, Designer Whey is used by many renal patients because it is low in phosphorus, potassium and carbohydrates, but is high in biological value, and can be mixed in a small amount of fluid and is easily consumed.

Q. Does protein leach calcium from my bones?

Scientific findings have shown that certain protein sources (milk, cheese and red meat) have shown no effect on calcium metabolism - even at high intakes. Also, recent scientific findings show that excess protein does not harm bones if calcium intake is adequate , whereas too little protein is always harmful to bones. In fact, whey based protein has been shown in research to increase osteoblast formation.

Q. What calcium levels are needed with protein intake?

The RDA for calcium for men and women aged 10 to 24 is 1,200 mg per day. For those over 25, the RDA is 800 mg per day. It's also important to get adequate vitamin D, which promotes calcium absorption.

Q. I thought you weren't supposed to combine carbohydrates and protein? Please explain.

Not true. You can combine protein and carbs. It's been a standard approach to nutrient intake since experts began studying nutrition. Carbohydrates can help speed protein digestion and delivery to muscles, especially after workouts.

Q. How do you partially predigest a protein?

Protease enzymes are used which hydrolyze high molecular weight proteins into peptides and amino acids.

Different protease enzymes act at specific points along the different protein chains to produce tailor made and reproducible peptide blends.

Q. Isn't hydrolyzed protein monosodium glutamate (MSG)? I heard that whey is essentially MSG.

Both of these statements are false. MSG is manufactured by fermentation of a carbohydrate feed stock. MSG is not found in whey, nor is it made from whey.

Q. I saw on your label that there is bovine serum albumin in your product?
What is bovine serum albumin? Can it hurt me?

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) gets its name from the Latin name for whey: serum lactis. In the dictionary you will also find that that serum means whey. Bovine serum albumin is a naturally occurring minor protein/peptide found in whey protein, and therefore, in cow's milk as well. Simply put, bovine serum albumin is a milk protein. If you currently drink cow's milk, then as long as you have been drinking milk, you have been consuming bovine serum albumin.

Bovine serum albumin is one of the protein fractions that makes whey protein so beneficial for health. You see BSA is rich in cysteine residues which are necessary for the production of glutathione㢀"the body's most important antioxidant (Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry, 1988). Research shows that glutathione acts as an anti-oxidant, protecting cells against free radicals...free radicals that can cause cancer and accelerate aging. Glutathione may also help to enhance your immune system.

Q. I thought amino acids were the best way to get protein. Is this true?

No, it's not true since free-form amino acids are poorly utilized by the body for protein synthesis. To get the amino acids your body needs, consume protein in the form of peptides (the best method) or eat whole, intact protein. In fact, scientists have found that protein in the form of peptides is absorbed much more rapidly - as much as 237% faster - than free form amino acids or intact protein.

Not only does whey protein improve nitrogen retention better than amino acids, research shows it also stimulates protein synthesis 119% better than casein. When 30 grams of whey protein were compared to 43 grams of casein protein, whey protein increased protein synthesis by 68%, while casein increased it by 31%.

Q. You say Designer WheyTM is clinically tested, how so?

Designer Whey
TM has been studied in several clinical studies:

  • Designer WheyTM has been shown to help promote muscle growth and fat loss. In a University research study, athletes who supplemented their diet with Designer WheyTM gained on average 4.6 lbs. of muscle and lost 4.4 lbs. of bodyfat after 4 weeks of systematic exercise training.
  • In a study conducted at Case Western Reserve University, laboratory animals fed a diet of Designer WheyTM had a reduced number (60%) of cancerous tumors of the head and neck by 60% when used in conjunction with photodynamic therapy. Researchers are currently evaluating whether or not Designer WheyTM may offer similar benefits to patients with cancer of the head and neck.
  • Research in progress at the University Hospitals of Cleveland has examined the anti-tumor effects of Designer Whey on tumor growth in hamsters exposed to carcinogens. Preliminary results demonstrated that Designer Whey significantly reduced the number and size (the tumors shrank by 80-90%) of cancerous cells in laboratory animals. The researchers hypothesize that Designer Whey reduces the growth of these tumors by various actions including:
    • Improved immune status
    • Detoxifying
  • Further, we are continuously participating in university and medical research to examine the proper levels of protein intake and possible health benefits for health conscious individuals like you.
